Whether you want a tough cross-country challenge, or a fun ride with friends and family - you can raise money for WoW!
If you enjoy cross-country cycling as a hobby - maybe you would like to challenge yourself to go a little further and raise money for charity into the bargain.
In 2009 two of our supporters undertook a coast-to-coast challenge from Morecombe to Scarborough and raised over £350 for the charity. Another supporter took on the London to Paris bike ride and raised over £500.
Linda tells the story of the coast-to-coast ride:
"On the 10th September 2009 my friend Gigi and myself set off on one of the biggest challenges we have ever undertaken! Armed with our bikes and rucksacks (and lots of energy food and drinks) we set off on the train from Scarborough to Morecambe. Inspired and encouraged by keen cyclists we had met, by chance, in a pub earlier that summer, we set off to cycle from Morecambe to Scarborough – approximately 150 miles coast to coast. It was hard work in places and there were times when we thought we wouldn’t make it but we pushed on and battled the hills – the ride down the other side was almost worth the gruelling effort of pushing up what felt like mountains!!! We were blessed by good weather and the scenery was stunning. We met up with our cycling friends on the Friday night and enjoyed a few drinks with them. We were all in high spirits, even the next day when, nursing hangovers, we set off on the last part of the journey. Again the weather was hot and sunny and we enjoyed the breathtaking scenery. We reached Sutton Bank around 2pm on the Saturday afternoon and began our climb up to the top – needless to say we pushed our bikes to the top! The feeling we got at the top was one of euphoria! Encouraged by a couple of motorcyclists, Gigi challenged us to get back to Scarborough that same night – we had originally planned to stay with a friend of hers at Kirkbymoorside. So we went for it. Exhausted and aching from carrying our rucksacks we arrived back at Scarborough and fell into the Leeds Arms pub at 8pm that night. Our friends were there to meet us and the atmosphere was electric – we were ecstatic and so proud of ourselves at what we had achieved, our cycling buddies were so amazed that we had completed it in the time we had. Neither of us are professional cyclists and basically do it to keep fit, but we will be on that train to Morecambe again this September and only hope that we have as good a time as we did last year and the weather is as kind!
We had decided that we ought to raise some money for charity and, thanks to a friend of Gigi’s, we heard about WOW and picked that as our charity."
If you'd prefer something gentler that you can do with a big group of friends, family and colleagues (young and old) then why not sign up to ride on the world's largest bicycle.
Charity Bikes created the Fumair Flyer in the late 90's for a successful attempt to break the World Record for the most people on a bicycle. It has space for over 24 simultaneous riders and comes with advertising space, fully trained staff and a support vehicle. A smaller version is available which takes 16 people. A bike ride like this is sure to grab attention (it is fitted with on board CD sound systems and air horns) and raise funds as well as providing a great day out for all those involved.
