2008 Grants

Dr Kulvir Hundal at the University of Oxford was awarded £10,770 for his project Changes in the Th1/Th2 immune bias in T, NK and NKT cells throughout the menstrual cycle - potential markers of implantation failure?

LAY TITLE: Changes in the number and types if immune cells (natural killer, cells, natural killer T cells and T cells) throughout the menstrual cycle

This study will be a part of a larger project looking at the role of peripheral natural killer (NK) and natural killer T (NKT) cells in implantation and recurrent miscarriage. This prospective, pilot study aims to analyse in detail the number of NK and NKT cells found at various points during the menstrual cycle of normal, healthy women. We will take blood from 20 women aged under 38 who have no history of reproductive problems and who do not use hormonal contraceptives.

Although this particular study is not assessing a clinical treatment or recruiting patients with subfertility or miscarriage, an understanding of how these immune cells vary during the menstrual cycle of normal women will increase our understanding of findings in women with reproductive failure.
